Convicted attorney Peel sentenced to 12 years in federal prison

News-Democrat

U.S.
District Judge William Stiel sentenced Glen Carbon Attorney Gary Peel
to 12 years in prison Monday in connection with trying to blackmail his
ex-wife with nude pictures of her sister.

Stiehl
earlier had determined the range of sentencing under federal guidelines
to be between 11 and 14 years. Peel’s defense attorney asked that
Stiehl depart from the guidelines and sentence Peel to about 8 years.

“Gary Peel should not die in prison,” defense attorney Dan Cronin said.

In
a statement to the court shortly before sentencing, Peel apologized and
said he is losing his law license and has lost his reputation, his
family and his wealth.

“I have nothing left,” he said. He told
Stiehl it was not necessary in sentencing him to send “some message
that I haven’t already received.”

A jury in March convicted Peel
of trying to blackmail his previous wife, Deborah Peel. The two had
divorced in 2003 and reached a financial settlement, then in 2005, Gary
Peel filed for bankruptcy and asked that he not be held to the terms of
the settlement. Deborah Peel filed a challenge to the bankruptcy.

In
January 2006, Gary Peel put in Deborah Peel’s mailbox nude pictures of
her younger sister, and threatened to mail them to her parents if she
didn’t drop her challenge. Peel had taken the pictures in 1974, when
he’d had an affair with the girl, who was 16 at the time, according to
authorities.
