Upon A Pedestal
How easy is it for us as humans to find a hero and hoist them upon a pedestal? I mean everyone wants someone they can look up to, we all need heroes and knights in shining armor to protect us, right? I believe that the hero worship of Mr. Obama is very dangerous, especially for those who are putting all of their hopes in a man. After all despite all the hubbub and confetti Mr. Obama is just as fallible as the rest of us.
Unfortunately, many believe this man to be the savior of the world, that knight on a white horse who is going to rush in and vanquish all of the foes. Those who believe this are headed for a fall, and the worst part is that Mr. Obama has not stopped this type of messiah worship. This type of adoration is not reserved for only individual people, no it also includes government entities.
Perry County, Alabama has declared that the 2nd Monday in November will now be Barak Obama Day. Ludlum Elementary School in Long Island will now be known as Barak Obama Elementary School. A northern Seattle alternative school is considering changing it’s name to the Barak Obama School. Here is a site that spent the election season gathering up examples of how Barak Obama was being portrayed by supporters and the media as the messiah with a capital “M”.
I am sure that in time there will be many more incidents of this but the part I do not understand is why would this man be held up as any type of example of a knight in shining armour? What has he done to garner such respect and adoration and belief by the masses? I find this frightening and disturbing, not that so many would vote for him but so many would worship him.
I also wonder if Mr. Obama is going to pick up the pieces of all those shattered hopes when he fails to deliver on the expectations of the masses? Is he going to be humbled and saddened that so many have placed their hopes and dreams in him and he did not even speak up to let them know he was only human? How are the masses going to react when the light bulb goes off and they see that their savior is a not a savior at all but a fallacy?
I am thankful that I do have a Messiah who does not fail me. Learning to lean on the Creator is often, at least in my case, fraught with much trial and error and pain. However, I also know that my Savior will never leave me and carries me through the trials I face. My prayer is that for all of those who have put their hopes, faith, and dreams in a human will realize that while heroes can inspire, making a man into an idol will only lead to disillusionment and despair.
