ILLINOIS POLICY INSTITUTE CALLS FOR ELIMINATION OF
HEALTH FACILITIES PLANNING BOARD

CHICAGO–The Illinois Policy Institute continued its call for eliminating the Illinois Health Planning Board in a letter to the editor featured in today’s Daily Herald, the third largest newspaper in Illinois. In this piece, Greg Blankenship argues that the decision to delay the approval of building a proton-therapy cancer center at Central DuPage Hospital is another sign the IHPB is failing at its core mission. Click here to review the letter.

The Illinois Health Facilities Planning Board has refused, thus far, to approve plans for a proton-therapy cancer center that would be built near Central DuPage Hospital. What is the reason for this? A similar facility at Northern Illinois University was approved last February, and the Board asserts there is not enough demand for a second facility in such a close proximity. However, there are 5,200 residents within fifty miles of these facilities that will not be able to reap the benefits of proton-therapy because the NIU facility can only handle 1,500 patients per year. In a further analysis of this dispute, Blankenship argues there are no economists on this board, yet they are basing this decision on economics. They should base it on the demand for health care: Patients are in need of accessible, innovative health care treatment. The Illinois Policy Institute contends eliminating the Board would be a giant step towards improving health care for Illinoisans.
